Essentially, when you feel that you’re the one in control of your life, you feel happier and at peace. On the other hand, if you feel you’re controlled by work, bills, etc—you feel stressed and tend to have a negative outlook on life.

Therefore, developing a mindset of internal control—where you feel accountable, responsible, and in charge of your life is crucial to feeling empowered and happy. People who have a mindset of external control on the other hand feel that they are controlled by external factors and can do very little about their own life.

So, how does one develop this mindset of internal control?

The key to staying positive is being decisive—to know what you want from life. Only if you know what you want can you actually take steps to get there!

  • Examine your life—check which areas you feel in control, and where you don't.
  • Then, write down what you want in each aspect of your life -specific things you can do to gain control in your career, relationships, etc.
  • With a clear sense of what you want, you will feel in control, and can create an action plan to achieving your goals!
